How a holiday time-out can change you

WHEN THE STRESS OF LIFE DISSIPATES, A LESS STRESSED VERSION OF YOU IS PRESENTED

“You’re a different person here!”

It is only when you take a break and escape the usual routine that you are able to be your true and authentic self.

Being able to really connect with those around you, be present and appreciate your environment is easier said than done. When you can remove the time pressures, work stresses, digital device notifications, school routines, endless cooking/cleaning/washing, societal expectations, playing parent, partner, friend and sibling and staying one step ahead of everything that may need to be done, you can become a lighter and more ‘free’ person.

Finding your lighter, more relaxed and gentle self in everyday life can be difficult. Exercising mindfulness, gratitude and focused connection while battling your usual routine and expectations can feel like a disconnect.

There are moments when I look at my kids and think “wow! You’ve grown” or “when did you become so mature all of a sudden?” When you are down and out and the children step up, it offers a glimpse into everything that I have done right while not feeling like I was reaping any rewards or making any inroads.

I will be certain to take note that creating time for me, to meet my needs before pre-empting everyone else’s needs and the chores that need to be done …. how to create this? I am not quite sure but it certainly starts with prioritising me.

I hope the holiday glow and vacation demeanour continues last long after the whinging commences at home!
